Chinese Composition 6-step ONE + ONE

Outreach Lesson Publication 6-book Book Alive series is designed to help your primary school going child excel in Chinese composition writing.

Composition writing is one subject where a book is not able to fulfill the learning outcome on its own. It always has to be supplemented with the guidance of a teacher. That is exactly what we have done. Our books come with the teacher - and it is not just any teacher. The lessons come straight from the horses' mouth - the author who created the book.

Pedagogically, we use a 6-step approach to the teaching of the topic.

Step 1: We get the student to understand the topic, and the salient points associated with the topic.

Step 2: We get the student to develop the draft. How to link the pictures (for example) into a logical flow? How to interpolate, how to extrapolate?

Step 3: We guide the students in creating relevant sentences, phrases in the subject matter of the topic.

Step 4: We show the students how those ideas developed in Step 2 and the phrases/sentences of Step 4 are linked into a cohesive essay.

Step 5: We give a critique of the essay, and suggest alternative ways of writing the same topic; different ways of introduction, different ways of concluding, different twists, etc. We get the students to develop style and add variety.

Step 6: We guide the student re-write the model essay with variation in style.

Essay Grading and Critique Service

After each virtual classroom lesson, you should practise writing an essay of a similar nature on your own. To fully benefit from the exercise, you should have a teacher to give you feedback on your work; what mistakes you have committed, and how you can do better.

Outreach Lesson Personalised Essay Grading and Feedback Serviceis designed to provide this feedback to the student's essay. In this service, our teacher will go through your essay, point out your mistake, analyse your approach, and give you suggestions on how to improve your essay.

Our service goes beyond pen and paper correction of mistakes, which in most tuition centres are merely a correction of wrong words. Our service is a Multimedia Recording (both voice and visuals) of a teacher going through your essay, as if she is sitting beside you, with all her attention focused on your essay.

How it works?

Once you have decided to subscribe to the essay grading service, go to the order page, to pay for the desired service; 1-, 2- or 3- months. You should also purchase the appropriate CDROM lesson title for the instructions on the essays that you are going to write.

Once payment is received, you will receive an email informing you of your userid. The starting date of the 1 month, 2 month or 3 month periods (depending on the package you selected) will begin with the receipt of your first essay, or 2 weeks after we have sent your userid, whichever is earlier.

We do not dictate the time in between your submission. However you should try to adhere to one essay a week. Only with an intensity of once a week, would you see improvement in your writing skill. We will only grade up to 5, 10 or 15 essays for the 1-, 2- and 3-month package.

You should begin your training by viewing the appropriate lesson on the CDROM lesson title. Once you have completed the lesson, you will write your essay, as instructed in the lessons.

After you have finished writing your essay, FAX the essay to us at 31507345, or you can scan the essay into your computer and EMAIL to us at chinese-essay@orlesson.org. Of course if you had typed your essay on the computer, you can just email the softcopy to us. Please ensure your userid, email address and the CDROM title/lesson number are on the top of your paper.

Once received, our teacher will go through your essay and record a critique; pointing out your mistakes, analyse your essay and giving you suggestion on how to improve the essay, in term of more appropriate phrases, structure, etc. Once done, she will upload the recording of her critique to our server and send you an email giving you the download link.

When you received the email, click on the link and save the file to your hard-disk. Once downloaded, double click on the file to view the recording of the critique.

Click here to download and view a sample of the grading sample. Remember to save the file to your harddisk, and once the downloading is complete, double click on the saved file to view the video.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Outreach's programme compared to going for tuition at a tuition centre?

Writing is a difficult subject to teach, compared to the teaching of vocabulary and grammar. You need to have a good, experience teacher to fully benefit from the sessions. Good essay writing teachers are not easy to come by. If you do find one, their fees are high. Mdm Li is one of the best essay writing teachers in the profession, and her book and lessons are only $7.90, not sufficient to buy 10 minutes of an excellent teacher's time!

Moreover, with recordings you can review the lessons again and again, or skip parts that you already know.

Gradings in schools and tuition centres are mainly limited to pen and paper corrections. Teachers may read out some better written essays, but it is rare that a teacher will go through the essay of each student individually with the student. So in a way most students do not get real feedback on their own essays. It is just some "good" essays, really, what difference is that compared to reading a book of model essays. At the end of the day, the student is still left to figure out why his/her essay is only worth a 6/10, and how that 6/10 can be transformed into a 8/10 or better.

With Outreach Lesson Essay Grading and Feedback Service, you get feedback on YOUR essay, not someone else's essay. We fix the last missing link for you.

Why are your prices so low?

Our price is low because we leverage on technology to do things more cleverly.

Most lectures are monologues in the first instance. Most students do not ask questions. If that is the case, what then is the difference between listening to the monologue of a teacher live, or a recording of that monologue? Let us face it; no difference. But by recording that lesson, we only need to pay the teacher once, not for each session for 20-30 students. We pass that saving to you.

Essay grading is a time consuming process, but unfortunately necessary. If you have to get a Singapore based teacher to do the feedback, then it will not come cheap!

Well, your essay is not graded in Singapore! It is graded in a land where a billion people speak/write Chinese as a first language; I am sure you guessed it - China.

Yes, we get highly qualified Chinese language teachers from China to grade your essay - in China. This is the only way we can keep the cost low. Yes, many of the teachers in schools are from China, just like Mdm Li is now in RGS. But once they are in Singapore, the high cost of living here, would mean we need to follow the local salary structure.
